Job Description:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to the Conservation staff in preparing collections for digitization, as well as related preservation activities, with a focus on archival paper, manuscript, and photographic collections. An ideal candidate will have a 4-year degree in museum studies. As part of the team working on the Archival Paper Digitization program, the contractor performs condition assessment and physical maintenance for the archival and manuscript collections, and flags items requiring special care in handling, or which may need interventive treatment to facilitate digitization or use:
Review archival collections, assess the general condition of materials, identify specific issues, and adjust housing/enclosure format as needed.
Ensures correct archival order of the collection materials is maintained.
Retrieves and returns collections identified for review to and from onsite locations.
Coordinates with members of the Digital Resources and Coordination Branch and Archival Affairs Branch to facilitate the workflow of collection materials for digitization.
Assists staff conservator in minor treatment of artifacts as needed, such as surface cleaning, removal of pressure-sensitive tape, minor mending, and flattening.
Designs and constructs custom enclosures for collection materials in consultation with the conservators.
Documents digitization review workflow by generating and maintaining electronic records.
Assists staff conservators in review, preparation, and handling of collection artifacts for imaging/digitization.
Assists staff conservators in related preservation activities such as environmental monitoring and integrated pest management.
